Learn to surf, 'Plunge' style!

This is a lesson in how to surf, written by Max Newsom, the director of 'Plunge.' He's pretty impressive on a longboard... If you're interested in learning to surf, read on...

He suggests that you...

1) Find a buddy to surf with (never surf alone)

2) Always warm up a little before going into the sea, and make sure you stretch. Like any demanding sport, surfing is going to test your muscle tone.

3) Get the right gear

4) Choose the right beach

5) Get at least one lesson

6) Wear strong sunblock (At least factor 30, even if you tan easily)

7) Starting on the sand (mastering the basics)

8) More helpful tips from the man himself...

9) Get into the water and surf your first wave!

10) How to fall off (this is pretty important, even when you're really good!)

11) Learn to surf the big green ones! (finally!)

12) How to get 'out back' (and Max's disclaimer!)

Get out of the sea when you start to become really tired or dehydrated (Cramp can follow and is frightening, even in shallow water. If you make sure you have plenty of salt in your diet and ideally some before going out to surf in the morning. Also drink lots of bottled water regularly before, during and after the surfing day. Avoid over-eating at lunchtime. It generally helps to eat healthily when undertaking surfing... and hangovers are not helpful!!
