Chapter 1 - Finding the Dream PLUNGE was conceived on a layby on the M4. Max Newsom, the writer and director, was hitching to Cornwall with a tape recorder. He had it in mind to ask the people they met if there was any Surf and Love in their life. It took him two days to get from London to Cornwall, via the Welsh borders, housing estates, Vauxhall Viva's, Kombi's, young women's cars and the usual suspect service stations. Yet, everywhere he went, people wanted to talk to him and the message was always the same: they were trapped and wanted to get out. The sea sounded great and if surf was an idea, they wanted to be on it. Most importantly, Max spent a few days learning how to ride the waves, experienced the innocent kind of fun and magic not felt since childhood, and, most important, discovered a different kind of happiness that he felt he should try and share. Six months and several trips back to Cornwall later, a script had been written... |
